BPW/MI Monday Minute May 14th, 2006 This is the last Monday Minute I will write as your state president. This coming weekend, a new executive committee will be installed to oversee the business of BPW. During the year, I have asked each member to participate at the local and state levels. I have encouraged you to be a part of each meeting, volunteer to serve on committees, and use your talents and experience to better BPW/MI. I have asked you to become an advocate for something you believe. That doesn’t mean you have to become a lobbyist; it just means that you need to find a passion and stand firm in your conviction. It may be something in your local community, or something that impacts a larger area. But, stand out for something. It seems less and less members are willing to take charge and learn the leadership process. I encourage you to take that step. You will never know where you can go and what you can achieve until you do. Become a committee member or chair. Step up to accept the role of a local organization officer, or serve on the state level in some capacity. We need more leaders. I have attempted to open the doors of communication – sometimes the only voice I heard was my own. Sometimes when I least expected it, a message would come back saying “thanks” or “keep up the good work”. I found that it can be lonely to serve as president, but at least the door was open to listen and learn. As Penny Modlin and the new board of directors take over and move into a new structure of governance, I hope you will each be there to support and encourage them. This is still a grassroots organization and you are the most important link in its success. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve this federation. Trish Knight State President May 05- May 06
