BPW/MI Weekly Minute July 7th, 2008

In 1918 Michigan merged their business and professional women’s clubs around the state into one organization, one year before the national organization was created. In 2008 BPW/Michigan once again was ahead of BPW/USA in reorganizing our executive committee to reflect current needs.

May’s state convention saw dramatic changes in BPW/Michigan’s leadership structure. Those in attendance took the courageous steps to eliminate the position of President-Elect, replacing it with the Immediate Past State President as a member of the board and as backup person for the President. They also made the President a two-year term (starting next year), thereby giving our President more time to implement her programs for the state. These are similar to changes that will be occurring on the national level starting in July.

In June BPW members around the country had the opportunity to vote for their national officers, area representatives, and four national bylaws changes. Bylaws changes voted on at a special February National Conference gave this right to all members instead of just the members able to attend the annual National Conference. I hope everyone was able to participate in this historic vote.

Summer is a good time to review your local club’s bylaws. Don’t forget that last October 1st the national dues went up to $60 for active members and $21 for student members, so your local bylaws need to reflect this change. If there is anything I can do to answer any of your bylaws questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Have a great summer, and see you at Fall Board.
