Typically the turnout for non-presidential elections is very poor. This means your votes carry even more weight in this election. There are significant races to be decided this year. Please be sure to turn the ballot over and vote on all the ballot proposals. BPW Michigan members have been working hard to get out the word to just vote NO on Proposal 2.

What can your local do to help get out the vote and educate voters? I am so glad you asked. Do you have members who need help getting to the polls or need to vote absentee? You can arrange rides or child care. You can even take an application for an absentee ballot to them.

Focus on preparing for the election by distributing information about candidates and ballot proposals to your members. There is an amazing amount of information on the web. My new favorite website is www.vote-smart.org. This website gives you information about candidates along with summarizing the groups who have endorsed them. A summary of ballot proposals will soon be on the BPW/MI website and you can find additional information on the League of Women Voters website at http://www.lwvmi.org.

Finally, make sure you vote. Make sure your friends and family vote. Finally, give your staff time to vote and make it a priority.

Wishing you a happy election day,
Susan Dehncke
