YOUR RIGHT AS AN AMERICAN

Election Day is tomorrow! That’s right, tomorrow is Election Day in the USA and ALL American Citizens have a chance to exercise their personal right to VOTE for the candidate of their choice. As individuals we have the RIGHT to choose our government leaders. OK, some of you out there say so what, I’ve done this my whole life, and this election year is not a presidential election, so it’s not a big deal. I find that way of thinking very unfortunate, and it breaks my heart to hear those words. Why would any American not go to the election polls on Election Day? I do not understand this. In my area of the world, the news media says we can expect less than 30% voter turn out for any non-presidential election year. Can you believe it? Why not buck the trend, prove the nay sayers wrong, go VOTE!

We as women have a lot at stake on ballot issues this year, like with Proposal 2, which if this proposal passes, we will be going backwards with affirmative action in the area of higher education acceptance programs, employment considerations and gender based programs that in part are funded by public institutions. The opposition wants you to believe that this is a race issue only, do not be fooled, it is not, it is a woman’s issue. No, affirmation actions does make the injustices of the past perfect, but it does help level the playing field so many more may have the opportunity to compete despite any social injustices which may have limited an individual personal development. The opposition wants you to believe that the current state law is no longer necessary in today’s school and business climate. As women, we know differently. Yes, we have made great strides towards equability, but we are not there yet. We still lag behind our male counterparts in Michigan. Get out there, be part of the process, part of history in the making. Take Action!

So, please do not take your voting rights for granted. Get to the election polls tomorrow, VOTE, be proud to do so, after all, you are an AMERICAN CITIZEN!
